It has been a long winter and we are ready for your warm and sunny days! During the winter months, everyone has a risk of developing Seasonal Depression symptoms, including the elderly. Though there are many factors that contribute to Seasonal Depression, today we are going to focus on improving the symptoms. First, keep a look out for these common symptoms in your loved ones:
- social withdrawal.
- daytime sleepiness.
- decreased interest in activities.
- and weight gain.
Our staff at Mill Valley attempt to decrease these symptoms by providing all of our residents with a healthy diet and encourage them to participate in daily exercise/activities. We also monitor for symptoms of depression and review concerns with their doctors. Although medications can be used to treat symptoms of Seasonal Depression, there are several non-pharmacological treatments that are simple and can make a huge difference in the happiness and well-being of your loved ones.
Remember these tips:
- Exercise is the most effective means to manage Seasonal Depression symptoms.
- Eat a well-balanced diet.
- Keep plants or flowers in your loved one’s rooms that have bright accented colors. This will help bring more life to their living space.
- Add more natural sunlight to their rooms by opening blinds and curtains.
- Get out doors and enjoy the warm weather and sunlight! Accompany your loved ones on walks or talk outdoors when you come to visit.
