Depending upon the Jackson County COVID positivity rate, masks and eyewear are required for all visitors, volunteers, and staff at the Mill Valley Care Center (MVCC) and the Sunrise Villa Assisted Living (SVAL).  This is per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidelines, with updates occurring almost daily as of (9/30/2021).  Please call/phone before visiting, as conditions may change.

Thanks to all the families of the residents and tenants for contacting staff regarding their visiting times with their loved ones and following the CDC Guidelines and mask wearing, when “Connecting” with their families during the weekdays and weekends.

In-house Activities have resumed; individualized and very small group Activities with the residents and tenants, and volunteer visits have resumed, as able; following the CDC Guidelines, with staff, visitors and volunteers wearing masks and protective eyewear.

Residents, tenants, and their families are encouraged to connect with loved ones with visits, or via phone calls and/or video chats, that are available throughout the day.

Individualized in-room visits or monthly visits are being scheduled for the Presbyterian Church Service and for the Lutheran Church Service (with Pastor Paul Gammelin) have resumed.  Catholic Church Services (with Pastor Robert Gross or Associate Pastor David Ambrosy) have resumed being held weekly on Wednesday or on the local cable Channel-32 for the Catholics during the past four weeks and on Sundays.

Lutheran Service on local cable Channel-26 was held for the Lutherans on Sundays.

Individualized in-room “Exercises” or “Small Group” were held with the residents during the past four weeks.

Individualized in-room “Manicures” and/or “Small Group” activities were held with the residents (individualized at the MVCC) and the tenants (at the SVAL) during the past four weeks, as able.

“Games” were/are available with the tenants in their own room at the SVAL during the afternoon on Monday through Friday, following the CDC Guidelines and Precautions.

Individualized “Games of Choice” were available for the residents/tenants, Monday – Thursday.

“Danny O’Donnell” and other Christmas Holiday videos were played for the residents and tenants throughout the week or else during the midmornings and/or afternoons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the last four weeks.

Jill Huling (Dietary Supervisor) for her assistance in Activities, hosting “Beverage of the Week with Dietary” held for the tenants (at the SVAL) and the residents (at the MVCC) during the afternoon on four Mondays.

Richard Helbing, Millie Hoff, and Carol Capesius (residents, volunteers) for hosting the game “Dominoes” during the afternoon on two Mondays.

Vincent S. (tenant, volunteer) for hosting “Bingo” games held with the tenants (at the SVAL) during the afternoon on Tuesday with Joy M. (staff).

Richard Helbing, Betty Gonner, Dale Eggers, and Millie Hoff (residents, volunteers) for hosting the “Pass the Pigs” game during the afternoon on Tuesday with Joy M. (staff).  Kelly O’Donnell (volunteer) for assisting Activities and providing the attending residents an opportunity to learn a new exercise skill during the afternoon on Tuesday.

A new exercise activity called “Hunting for Deer” (with toy nerf guns) was introduced to the residents during the afternoon on Tuesday, where the “Deer” were participating Staff members wearing “deer antler head gear”.  Kelly Pancratz (Speech Therapy), Kieryn Aigner (Physical Therapy), and [absent, but present in “spirit”, Kelly O’Donnell (Occupational Therapist)] for supplying the “deer antler head gear”, Jill Huling (Dietary Supervisor) for assisting in “loading” the nerf guns for the residents and taking photographs for later postings on Facebook, Patty Reynolds (Administrator) for assisting, Pam Reedy (Administrative Assistant) for supplying the many toy nerf guns, along with Joy M. (staff) during the afternoon on Tuesday.

Jacob Till (K-12, Vocal Music Director and Campus Minister) and Rachel Timmerman (Theology Teacher) both from the Marquette Catholic School, along with the Marquette High School Choir (16 students) for visiting, bringing many assorted Christmas Cards (made by the students, K-12) for the residents/tenants, and hosting a Sing-Along of Christmas Songs/Carols for/with the residents (at the MVCC) and the tenants (at the SVAL) during the late noontime on Tuesday.  Jacob Till, Rachel Timmerman, and the MHS Choir students for assisting/interacting/sharing with the residents/tenants, thereby helping to make a difference in the lives of the residents/tenants during this Holiday Season.  Jeanne Weber (volunteer) for her assistance during this event.

The volunteers who helped host the “Presbyterian Christmas”:  Max Reed, Mary Reed (accompaniment on the piano), Melissa Reed (coordinator), Kemis Hoyt, Marge Reed, Mike Reed, Emily Reeg, Janice Carr, Bob Baugh, Margaret Baugh, Laurie Anderson, Maurice Anderson, and Vivian Pitlo.  The Christmas celebration featured singing of Christmas songs and readings from the Scriptures to the festive coming of “Santa Claus” arriving and delivering “goodies” to all the residents and tenants during the late afternoon on Wednesday.  [Mary Jo Konrardy (Universal worker, volunteer) for her assistance in Activities, assisting “Santa Claus” (at the SVAL), so Santa would not miss a single tenant with “goodies”.]

Vivian Pitlo, Dianne Strickler, and Liz Barry (volunteers) from the American Legion Auxiliary Ladies for singing Christmas songs for the residents (at the MVCC) and the tenants (at the SVAL) to a sing-along during the evening mealtime on Wednesday.  Mary Jo Konrardy (Universal worker, volunteer) for her assistance in Activities on Wednesday.

David Eischeid (volunteer art instructor) and Mary Kubik (volunteer assisting Dave Eischeid) for visiting and hosting “Artwork with David and Mary” (an artwork class) during the morning on two Thursdays and helping our small group of resident/tenant art students unlock their art talents.

Mrs. Tracy Weber (FBLA advisor at the Bellevue Community High School) with students:  Alex Caughron, Taylor DeWitt, Elyse Berendes-Green, Morgan Babb for assisting us with the assembling and decorating the Christmas Trees during the afternoon on Thursday.  Mrs. Jill Roe (MS/HS Vocal Music teacher at the Bellevue Community Middle/High School) with the Bellevue High School Choir:  Evan Davies, Brooke Bowman, Jozie Veach, Brianna Edwards, Addison Kilcoyne, Max Freiburger, Payton Griebel, Brook Davies, Jay Sauser; and “Santa”, for hosting the “Holiday Traditions of Christmas Tree Decorating” with “Holiday Christmas Sing-Along Music” for/with the residents and tenants during the afternoon on Thursday, that involved singing along the hallways and stopping at some of the residents’ and tenants’ rooms during the afternoon on Thursday.  Jeanne Weber (volunteer) for assisting Tracy Weber and students decorating the Christmas trees, and for her involvement during the Chef Kevin Food Activity while visiting with the residents, tenants, and staff.

Chef Kevin Hebert (Executive Chef from Healthcare of Iowa) for visiting the MVCC and hosting a live cooking demonstration (activity) in front of an involved audience of residents, tenants, family members, staff, volunteers, and visitors during the afternoon on Tuesday.  Jill Huling (Dietary Supervisor), Karen Parramore (Dietary staff), Nursing staff, Environmental Services staff, Joy Marchiando (Recreation Program Director), Patty Reynolds (Administrator), and other involved staff for their assistance in making this event possible during afternoon on Tuesday.

(volunteer) for hosting an Activity Fund Raising Craft Sale (featuring the theme “Deck the Halls”) at the MVCC during the morning on Friday, and for creating the many wonderful craft items displayed at the craft sale.  Joan McKim (volunteer) for contributing (creating and displaying) some items at/for the craft sale and assisting us during the craft sale.  Theresa Schwager (staff, volunteer) for assisting the Craft Sale fundraiser for the Activity Fund (at the MVCC).  (All proceeds go towards purchasing Activities items for the residents.)  Thanks to all the staff, volunteers, residents, and families who were involved in making this Craft Sale a success.

Mrs. Blair Gerlach [Agriculture Educator, Future Farmers of America (FFA) Advisor at the Bellevue Community Schools], and the Bellevue FFA students:  Adalynne Leach (Reporter), Delaney Dunne (Treasurer), Ryanne Dunn (President), Hope Griebel (Vice-President), Aunika Hager (Sentinel), Adrianna Budde-Heiar, Conner Kilburg, Hunter Merrick, and Maverick Scheckel for scheduling/planning time with us to decorate sugar cookies with residents (at the MVCC) during midmorning and with the tenants (at the SVAL) during the afternoon on Thursday.  Thanks for providing the supplies.  Thanks also for the students interacting and playing some games (Bingo) with the residents and (Sequence and other games) with the tenants.  Jill Huling (Dietary Supervisor) for providing the cookies, having set-up and clean-up, assisting with the frostings, and assisting with this Activity with Joy M. A “Soup Cookoff Contest” was held with the attending residents, tenants, and Dale Meier (volunteer) being judges of the Vegetable Soup and Chicken Noodle Soup entries during the afternoon on Friday.   Congratulations to the winner of the Soup Cookoff Contest, Jill Huling (Dietary Supervisor).  Thanks to all the participants involved in this event.

Mary Jo Konrardy (staff, volunteer) for allowing us to borrow her beautiful Christmas trees and decorations for this Holiday Season at the SVAL, at the MVCC, and at the Gazebo during this past month, and helping the residents and tenants enjoy these beautiful sights.

Theresa Schwager (volunteer/staff) for assisting Activities with “Santa’s Workshop” on Wednesday.  “Santa” for arriving and giving us a glimpse into his workshop just days before Christmas.  Santa’s helpers were busy preparing for their “deliveries” on December 23rd.  Thanks to the Bellevue Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) and the Board of Directors with Special Thanks to Brittany Ehlinger (at the Bellevue State Bank) and volunteers for making this a “beautiful” Christmas.  Thanks to all of the Bellevue & Maquoketa area participants, Maquoketa Community Star Program (Wendy Zaruba and Tara Rosenbohm), Ronelle Clark & Laura Westhal (Christmas Star Program, Maquoketa Community Services/Operation New View), the Maquoketa Community; all participating staff at MVCC/SVAL, and all the Anonymous individuals who were generous in reaching out to “grasp a star”, which made a difference in the lives of our residents and tenants this Christmas.
