The warm sunny weather is a welcoming sight after the long cold winter. Though beneficial, the sun and heat can cause harm to the elderly without the right precautions. As we age, we lose the ability to conserve water, do not recognize thirst sensations, and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes. This makes us more susceptible to dehydration and other heat related illnesses.
Please stay safe and enjoy the beautiful weather by following these tips:
- Stay hydrated and drink water often.
- Keep cool.
- Wear loose fitting and breathable clothes.
- Protect your eyes.
- Use sunblock and wear a hat.
- Limit your time outdoors on hot days and make sure you know a cool place to go to and relax.
At Mill Valley Care Center many of our residents are at a higher risk of heat related injury. This is caused by deficits in their cognitive functioning which affects their ability to make safe decisions, and they can be on medications that make them more sensitive to the sun.
From all of us at Mill Valley Care Center, have a safe summer!
