Nursing News

Amy Waller, RN

Director of Nursing

The safety and health of our residents is a major priority.  To provide the safest possible environment for all our residents and to ensure our facility runs smoothly, let’s review some items that are not appropriate for family or friends to bring into the facility.  Please talk with Jim Harkness or myself if you have any questions regarding the following items.

  • All medications including over the counter medication, such as Tylenol, Tums, cough drops, medicated creams and ointments such as Vicks and Bio Freeze, and powders such as Gold Bond, are items that cannot be kept in the resident’s rooms.

We need doctor orders for all medications.  If a resident is needing any of these medications, please talk with the nurse.  Residents will have access to the items as they need them.
  • A good rule of thumb is that any item that contains ingredients/chemicals that requires the warning “Keep out of reach of children” is not appropriate to be kept in the resident’s room.

This includes Aerosol hair sprays, air fresheners, disinfectant sprays and wipes, and hand sanitizers.
  • We do not allow weapons such as guns, knives, etc., into our facility.  But also be careful that you are not bringing in scissors, pocket knives, needles, and letter openers.

Some of these items are safe to use with staff supervision and can be stored in the activity room.
  • Disposable wipes plug up our sewage system when flushed down the toilets.  We use warm water and soap with washcloths to clean and freshen skin.  Please refrain from bringing in disposable wipes.  You will be asked to take them home.

Thank-you for your understanding.  Have a great March!  Please call me with any questions or concerns.
